STONES OF POWER
Before considering the possible significance of the magnetic factor at ancient sites, we must look at an equally relevant feature â natural radioactivity. It is difficult to discuss this subject without the spectres of Three Mile Island, Chernobyl, Sellafield and atomic weaponry being conjured up. But nuclear energy plants and weapons use artificially high levels of radiation. Natural radioactivity is one of the fundamental forces of the universe; it has always been present. On Earth, we experience it from radioactive material scattered through the rocks in the Earthâs crust, and from the heavens in the form of cosmic ray bombardment â charged particles from the Sun and galactic sources. Such background radiation is thus always present to some degree. In Britian the National Radiological Protection Board estimates that gamma rays from the ground account for 16 per cent of the total average dose received by a person, while cosmic rays account for 13 per cent. Radioactive radon gas which issues from the ground as a result of uranium decay accounts for a huge 33 per cent.38
Radon gas has caused a storm of controversy in recent years in the United States, Britain and other countries, since it was found that the gas can accumulate in modern, well-sealed buildings. Long-term exposure to the gas is thought to encourage lung cancer. It is estimated that up to eight million homes in the United States and at least 20,000 in Britain may have radiation levels above the accepted safety limits. This gas is almost certainly one aspect of what the old Chinese feng shui geomants would have called sha, or âbad breathâ from the ground. So now modern society can start counting the cost of the lack of geomantic awareness in contemporary building practices!
Thousands of geiger counter and scintillometer readings have been taken as part of the Dragon Project and by Devereux and colleagues in separate research efforts at numerous ancient sites and test locations, in a wide range of landscapes in Britain, the United States and the Middle East. The first Dragon Project radiation monitoring was at the Rollright Stones. Over the years, most readings showed the circle to have the same range of geiger counts as the surrounding environment, but on odd occasions flares of readings, up to three times above the norm, were registered within the ring of stones.39 At the time when these occurred, the project did not have the capacity to monitor the site and its environment simultaneously, so it was not known if the increased periods of radioactivity, which lasted only a few minutes, were due to some common source, such as a cosmic ray shower, affecting the whole region. Work conducted in 1987, however, indicated that we may be looking at a site-specific phenomenon.
On 29 September of that year, American Dragon Project volunteers Cosimo and Ann Favaloro made a study of the Scottish stone circle known as Easter Aquorthies. By this time the project had the equipment to monitor background radiation at a site and its surrounding landscape simultaneously.
